MS Tech Days Canada Review

30 Sep

techdays-2009I attended the Tech Days event in Toronto this week and wanted to share my thoughts on the Communication and Collaboration track.  This track was focused on SharePoint during day one.

This was my first time attending this event and I was fairly disappointed with it.  This is not to say that I didn’t get any value from it – I did.  But MS tried to do to much in too short a time with too diverse an audience.  The intial informal survey of the audience indicated that there was a mix between SharePoint Admins, developers, those who had little experience with the platform and those that weren’t running it and wanted to learn more.

The initial session was titled Deploying MOSS in a virtualized world.  The speaker was very knowledgable.  The topics covered ranged from SharePoint topologies,  server relationships and roles, interesting facts on the mechanics of search indexing and querying, options for installing SharePoint, application log errors, information SQL Server aliasing, backup and DR options as well as some information about Hyper-V virtualization.  All this in an hour and a half!  Regardless, I talked to the presenter afterwards and got some excellent information about the mechanics of search indexing and moving your query services to your WFE.  This is something I have been considering for some time.

The next session was held by Eli Robillard, a long time SharePoint MVP that I have worked with in the past.  His level of knowledge is quite frankly incredible.  He spoke about versioning  and upgrade of SharePoint based solutions.  It was interesting but very, very detailed but I wasn’t clear on why it was not part of a development related track.  For the non-developer audience, which was most of the room, he might as well have been speaking Mandarin.  This is no way a knock on Eli, he is a wonderful presenter.

The following session was Comprehensive Security for MOSS 2007.  This was interesting but the coverage was too broad in my view.  There was good information about service accounts, permission levels, zones, authentication providers, FBA etc.  I found this quite useful.  The presenter then moved into standard SharePoint security.  I couldn’t quite grasp how someone that didn’t understand SharePoint OOB security would possibly benefit from a presentation the more administrative and technical aspects of security required to run the MOSS platform.

So overall I was disappointed but did come away with some information that I can use.  My advice to Microsoft is firstly to narrow the focus of the presentations.  Cover fewer topics more effectively.  Making the registration process more proactive in understanding the audience would be useful as well.  Personally I don’t think taking a show of hands to see who is a SharePoint admin at the beginning of the day is the appropriate time to get an understanding of your audience.

Will I go next year?  No.  However I’m glad I experienced it this year.   By the way – the breakfast was great, the lunch was awful.

Portals: Process + Praxis = Prosperity Part Deux

prosperity2For part 1 of these article please go here.

I want to take a moment to finish part 2 of this article.  It’s a simple concept but often overlooked for a variety of reasons.  The main idea is that whatever value you are trying to deliver through SharePoint will be so much more successful if it is part of an effective business process.  Wikipedia defines a business process as: “A business process or business method collection of related, structured activities or tasks that produce a specific service or product (serve a particular goal) for a particular customer or customers.”

In our organization, defining and improving business processes is often taken as, “These geeks in IT are just trying to give us a bunch of homework to do so they don’t have to do anything themselves.”

An example came up the other day regarding Cost Savings.  In these turbulent economic times it goes without saying that most organizations are focused heavily on finding efficiencies throughout their company.  So, in my world that means – “We need a SharePoint site to track cost savings.”  Let’s not even delve into the idea of whether SharePoint is the right solution upon which to build this solution at the moment.  After discussion with a non-IT SharePoint “expert” it was boiled down to the fact they didn’t need a site, they needed a list.

The users were sold that this was the ticket to successfully tracking cost savings and off they went.  To date their have been 4 cost savings ideas entered – all by the guy that owns the list and all over a month ago.  About the level of “success” that could be expected.

I got involved shortly before they went live in order to have a fresh set of eyes look at the situation.  The idea was that this was going to be a spot that people would flock to over time to share their cost savings ideas for the benefit of the company.  I told them flat out that as it stood this was guaranteed to fail and they hadn’t given it near enough thought.  They took it like champs.

Arrianna Huffington at Web 2.0

Tim O’Reilly is interviewing her right now.  There is far too much politics interwoven in this conversation but there are some interesting insights on new media versus old media.  Thoughts about how the internet is self-correcting in the sense that if a blogger makes an error it will be pointed out in moments versus traditional media who may issue a small correction the following day.

Having said that it’s clear to me that I am in the heartland of liberalism in the U.S.  Lots of McCain, Palin and Bush bashing, Obama worshipping and global warming regurgitation.  I won’t bother with adding my commentary but I’m sure why this conference is being used as a bully pulpit.  Regardless is always interesting to hear the opinions of others

Web 2.0 Expo

Day 2 of the Expo has wrapped up.  Honestly I’m finding the content a bit light and I think it would be more effective if the sessions were longer that 50 minutes.

Dion Hinchliffe gave an outstanding presentation on day 1 about building the next generation of web applications.  It was an excellent Web 2.0 primer and really made clear that there is a bold new world out there. Read it here:  Building Next Gen Web 2. Applications

I’ll be doing a full summary at the conclusion of the expo tomorrow.  In the meantime you can follow my tweets,

I arrived in New York yesterday. As I’ve mentionedt this is my first time here.  I’ve been walking around most of the day and took in the sights.  I visited the World Trade Center site which was a very humbling experience.  It’s so interesting to see the sights that I’ve seen on TV and get understanding of how they are related to each other.

Conference starts tomorrow.  I’ll be blogging daily and Tweeting throughout the day as well.

Web 2.0 Expo

The conference has just created their social network which will allow the attendees to connect with each other beforehand.  It’s a great idea although definitely a minimum requirement for this type of event.  I’ve picked my schedule with their simple to use tool. I’m primarily interested in the Landscape and Strategy track along with Web 2.0 @ work.

You can take a look at my profile here: http://webexny2008.crowdvine.com/profiles/25391

Web 2.0 Expo

I’m very excited to be attending this conference which is co-produced by TechWeb and O’Reilly Media.

Here’s a summary from the Expo Site that sums it all up.  Stay tuned for live blogging from the event and for feedback afterwards:

Summary:

We agree. Web 2.0 Expo was launched to connect the builders of the web with the brightest minds, hottest ideas, and most valuable tools – and with each other. New York has long been where the world’s biggest industries go online, and as Web 2.0 grows up and gets serious, the time is right to convene the East Coast web communities under the umbrella of the next generation web. It’s time to come together to learn, share and network. And it’s time to celebrate the size, power, and innovation of the East Coast web industry.

Web 2.0 Expo is for the builders of the next generation web: designers, developers, entrepreneurs, marketers, business strategists, and venture capitalists, people who have experiences to share and a passion for learning – the hot new thing, lessons from failures, innovations and inspirations, and the practical applications of all of the above.

What are the ways we can create more value for our businesses? How can we provide a more meaningful experience for users and customers? How can we have a positive impact on the world we live in? What tools and applications are right for a given project? How do we gather and focus data points to deliver relevant information? How can we increase conversation and collaboration?

The inaugural Web 2.0 Expo New York takes the pulse of the Web ecosystem and looks to its future, training a spotlight across the Web 2.0 universe to illuminate how the Internet Revolution is being created and delivered. What will you do with the power of Web 2.0?
